A former ESL instructor in South Korea, Danielle James’ tips on life in KoreaHow to be a stranger in a strange land
Being a foreigner in Chungju is a bit like being on parade. You will get stared at and strangers will try to talk to you. Sometimes they will ask you personal questions. Here a few tips on what to expect.
• Your Korean age. Koreans count age differently than in the west. When you are born you are already one year old. After the first New Year the baby gains another year. Your kid’s western age is generally one or two years younger then the age they will give you. This is important because Korean culture is age obsessed. Formal language is used with elders, even if it’s only a one year difference. On that note, you may want to use your Korean age when Koreans ask how old you are. Just add two years to your current age. Again the age thing is because of their culture and language and they are trying to determine how they should address you.
