School Introduction: China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) is one of the key universities under direct administration of China's Ministry of Education. It comes as one of the first institutions of higher education in China listed for the nation's "211" Project, the aim of which is to turn these universities into China's top talents training centers. CUMT is located in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, about half-way between Beijing and Shanghai. The university was originally established in 1909, but has undergone tremendous expansion since the early 80s, and now has an enrollment in excess of 18,000. Xuzhou was the capital of China two milleniums ago, and the area is filled with Han Dynasty tombs and other relics of that era, including a terra-cotta army of 3000. The municipal Museum is first-class, with artifacts from not only the Western Han period, but from both earlier and later periods. There is an emphasis on Mining Technology, but there are also programs in Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mathematics and Mechanics, Information Technology, Geology and allied fields. In addition, there are programs in the Humanities, including English Language and Literature. CUMT boasts of a well-qualified faculty totaling 1,245 with 4 academicians under Chinese Academy of Engineering, 70 doctoral supervisors, 174 full professors, 462 associate professors and 236 with other senior professional titles. CUMT has a student body of 18,000, including 10,800 undergraduates, 1200 for master's and doctoral degrees and 6000 for adult education. CUMT offers 34 undergraduate programs, 3 national-level key disciplines, 7 provincial level key disciplines. It has authority to confer master's degrees in 31 fields of study and doctoral degrees in 12 fields of study. It also offers post-doctoral research opportunities in 7 fields of study. CUMT offers good facilities for teaching and research. These include an audio-visual education center, a computer center, an analysis and testing center. Internet service is provided through the computer center via CERNET. The school library has a total about 1,520, 000 volumes, and is equipped with a computer management system, an domestic and international data retrieval system and an electronic reading room. It is listed as one of the major consultant stations of academic journals and data retrieval in China. CUMT maintains international cooperative relations with 48 universities and colleges around the world. 1,800 scholars and experts have come for lectures or joint research. 130 have taken teaching positions on the campus. It has also received students from Russia, Tanzania, Korea, Bangladesh Malaysia and Indonesia. ESL Position Description.China University of Mining and Technology.Contract terms and Requirements: 1. Position and Number For 2003-2004 academic year, 7 ESL positions are available at China University of Mining and Technology, of which two are categorized as experts and the other five as teachers. 2. Requirements for experts a. Minimum MA degree in relevant fields of study, preferably with teaching experience; b. Medium-level or senior professional title with the ability to teach core courses for junior and senior English majors as well as students toward MA degree in English language and literature. The core courses may include Selected Readings in British & American literature, Linguistics and so on. Weekly load : 12-16 class hours.; c. Observe Chinese laws as well as regulations set by the inviting party; d. Free from any unconcluded lawsuits back at home country; e. Both the employee and the accompanying person should be in good health conditions. 3. Requirements for teachers BA degree in relevant fields of study, preferably with teaching experience. They should be able to speak their native language in standard pronunciation and intonation. Weekly load: 16 class hours. Teaching duties may include: onversation, reading, composition and cultural survey of Great Britain and the U.S.. Other requirements are equal to c.d.e. for experts. 4. Salary and Living Treatment a. Salary Salaries vary greatly depending on the qualifications and academic standing of the employees. Currently three categories are available: Cat. I: 3,300-4,000 yuan (RMB) (BA holders with two years of teaching experience or high school teachers with over three years of teaching experience) Cat.II: 3,800-4,900 yuan (RMB) (university instructors, assistant professors or high school teachers with MA degree in relevant fields of study and over five years of teaching experience) Cat. III: 4,900-6,000 yuan (RMB) ( well-known university professors and associate professors) b. Travel Allowance 2,200 yuan (RMB) per academic year c. In accordance with the current regulations, 70% of the monthly salary can be converted into U.S. dollars. d. The university covers medical costs for foreign faculty up to 1000 yuan (RMB) per academic year. Foreign faculty are therefore strongly advised to purchase health insurance to cover major illnesses before coming to China. e. A furnished three-room apartment is to be provided for free in the apartment building for foreign faculty on the campus. Facilities such as computer, AC, heating, phone, full bath, TV, refrigerator are available. f. Foreign faculty are supposed to cover meal expenses themselves. A separate kitchen is available in the apartment. 5. International Travel Costs For foreign faculty who stay for one academic year, one round-trip international air ticket will be provided by China University of Mining and Technology.
