Located about an hour by plane from Shanghai and HongKong, Quanzhou has an area of 11,015 square kilometers and a population of 6.5 million people. Historically, the city of Quanzhou is famous as the starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Route and is visited by tourists for its attraction such as ancient statues, temples, and mosques of three major religions; Taoism, Buddhism and Moslem. There are pagodas, palaces, bridges built during China’s ancient dynasties.
The university is the only teacher’s training institution of higher education in Quanzhou under the supervision of the Educational Committee of Fujian Province.
There are three campuses within Quanzhou Normal University. The first campus on Chongfu Road, is located at the foothill of Qingyuan mountain. The second newly constructed scenic Dong Hai campus is located on the west of the East Sea District, approximately40 minutes by bus away from the city. The third campus is located in the town of Shisan, surrounded by rolling hills and farmlands, 60 kilometers away from Quanzhou. The population on all three campuses is currently more than 8000 students.
Graduates from different departments of the university provide the human resource needed for Quanzhou’s local economy.

Quanzhou Normal University is continuously expanding rapidly with modernization of both buildings and facilities. The library currently houses 590,000 books. University library materials are now available in CD-format, which can be accessed through the computer library terminals in the library’s reading rooms. We are looking for foreign teachers who will give
1. give English or Japanese speaking and listening lessons;
2. give English and American literature and writing;
3. give business, management and financial majoring lessons;
4. teach about 14 – 18 hours per week;
5. stay for at least one term; (Spring term is from February to July and Autumn term is from September to January) :
6. have at least a bachelor degree
Quanzhou Normal University offers the following to foreign teachers:
1. Remuneration of at least RMB 3500-5000 yuan per month depending on your qualification and teaching experience, calculated over 10 months per year. (The average cost of living in Quanzhou for local people per person is about RMB 500 yuan per month, for foreigner you can have a decent living on RMB 1000 yuan per month since housing is free.) ;
2. Extra income if you work more hours;
3. Free additional allowance of RMB 2200 per year for holiday travel;
4. Free one round trip airline ticket at the end of the contract year (one year contract);

Guide for New Foreign Teachers

Welcome to Quanzhou Normal University! Teaching in Quanzhou is an exciting and rewarding experience! To make your stay in Quanzhou a pleasant one,this Guide will help you as you plan for your travel to China. The Guide is not meant to be comprehensive, but provides basic information to new foreign teachers particularly first time visitors to China. We hope that you find the guide helpful to you. Housing:
Teachers are housed in furnished apartments/flats in the city or campuses (if available) of Quanzhou Normal University. In China electricity is 220 volts. It is advisable that small appliances brought from abroad are compatible or you may bring an adapter. Some of the small traveling adapter may not work as well as promised, check with the manufacturer of your appliances. Small appliances such as hair dryers can be purchased at low prices at local department stores. Some campus apartments/flats are wired for personal computers, which are provided to foreign teachers. You may bring your own laptop computers.
Clothing:
Quanzhou has four seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Because Quanzhou is a seaside city, winter is mild with temperatures ranging from the 10゜ to 20゜ Centigrade. Bring warm underwear for winter and spring. Apartments/flats and classrooms are not heated and can get drafty and chilly. Summer can be hot and humid with temperatures ranging from 31o to 38o Centigrade, but there is ocean breeze in the evening and at night. Bring windbreaker jackets for spring and autumn, and heavier outerwear for winter. Clothing in China is not expensive. If your size may not be available in China, you can either bring your own, or have clothes tailor made for you at very reasonable prices. Bring rain gear because it rains heavily in Quanzhou. However, umbrellas are available everywhere at low prices.
Food:
China’s cuisine is one of the best in the world! Seafood is the specialty in Quanzhou as a seaside city. However, cafeteria food on campus can be a challenge for foreign taste. Food can also be made to order at the cafeteria. If eating with chopsticks is a problem, western eating utensils can be purchased in Quanzhou. There are large supermarkets in the city that sell everything necessary for foreign appetite such as milk, yogurt, etc. There are American fast food restaurants such as Pizza Hut, McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Quanzhou. But there are many small restaurants that sell a variety of local food from simple rice dishes, noodles and dumplings to the more exotic dishes. For some, sampling local food in Quanzhou can be an exciting experience!
Transportation:
The roads and highways in China are the same as any in the world. Public buses, taxis and motorcycles are available in Quanzhou. Bus fares generally cost form RMB 1 to 1.5 yuan. Taxi fares typically cost from RMB 6 to 20 yuan depending on distance. Most taxi drivers are honest and courteous. Driving in the city is not advisable unless you can transfer your international driving license to a Chinese one. The traffic in the city is a bit chaotic. Because of this, it is not advisable to hire a motorcycle when getting around Quanzhou.

Yes, there is a washing machine in the apartment. Moreover, there is a laundry and dry cleaning service center on campus or clothes can be brought to professional laundries outside the campus.
7. What happens if I get sick?
As a foreign teacher, you can go to the clinic with all the medicine free of charge. While for major illness, all the expenses will be under your charge. The university will offer you an insurance for unexpected accidents.

Very limited? If you like to cook bring your own spices. For cooking food using basic ingredient such as chicken, pork or beef. It is not advisable to eat salad in China.
14. What shots do I need to get for China ? check with your local health authority, or the WHO website. It may not be a bad precaution to get hepatitis shot before coming to China.
15. What do I need to bring to china? Personal prescriptions, (Chinese pharmacy most likely will not be able to fill your prescription.) shoes, and clothing if you are wearing larger size than average Chinese.
