EF CEMPAKA MAS / JAKARTA INDONESIA
Please provide a CV, Covering letter recent photo with passport id page included.

Here is the basic information:

Thank you for your recent communication requesting information about job
possibilities at EF English First Cempaka Mas, Jakarta, Indonesia. We hope
that the following will be useful to you as you further consider working
with us.

Life and work at English First

EF English First is a Swedish-based international company dedicated to
educational exchange and English education. English First schools in
Jakarta are locally owned franchises, which follow the parent company's
norms concerning the operation of a professional ESL center. Working
conditions and benefits can vary between English First schools. We are
happy to explain the details of the contract and compensation package to all
applicants.

The students

The minimum age for study in the General English Program is 13 and the
majority of our students attend private secondary schools or universities.
They come to us looking for a supplement to the more formal
grammar/translation classes and we try to provide an active, communicative
and friendly student-based learning environment. We also offer
conversation, children's classes (6-12 year olds), TOEFL and business
classes.

The classroom

The General English curriculum consists of 16 levels. We provide the
student with a solid base in the structure of the English language as well
as a genuine opportunity to speak. This involves the extensive use of
communicative methodology to reinforce and complement various grammatical
points throughout the syllabus. In any given level at least 4 periods of 40
minutes each are devoted to work on computers where students can use CD-ROMs
to practice English at their own pace. In addition, teachers have a broad
range of choices for designing and using their own supplementary materials.
There is a resource library including supplementary activity files for every
level, resource books, laminated materials, cassette tapes and videos.

Responsibilities

Instructors teach an average of 17-18 classes per week. Each class lasts an
hour and twenty minutes. Most teachers have classes from 3pm or 4:30pm
until 9pm. The school sometimes runs morning classes and teachers must make
themselves available for these if asked to do so. Every effort is made to
avoid having teachers work "split shifts". Occasionally teachers have to be
available for substitute duties or for giving oral placement tests to new
students.

Compensation and benefits

Those doing their own research on Indonesia will know that average income
for nationals is extremely low by Western standards and the price of most
goods and services reflect this. The compensation below permits a
comfortable lifestyle including the cost of vacations within Indonesia. The
exchange rate makes sending money out of the country in order to pay debts
or save very difficult (although saving rupiah is not difficult). We are
happy to answer any specific questions about this during the application
process. Our compensation package includes:

· One year renewable contract.

· Return ticket to country of origin.

· Net monthly salary of 6 million rupiah for the first
3 months, then 6.3 million rupiah thereafter.

· EF assumes all costs involved in procuring a work
visa, including the cost of the necessary trip to Singapore.

· EF provides medical insurance covering
hospitalization and an annual medical allowance of 1 million rupiah.

· Bonus of 1 month's salary upon completion of
contract.

· 14 vacation days in addition to 2 weeks off when the
school is closed (at Christmas and the end of Ramadan).

· Free internet access.

· Free accommodation shared with other teachers in our
furnished condo.

The city and the people

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is a large sprawling metropolis. It is
situated on the northwestern tip of Java. It is within easy traveling
distance of the resort towns of Bogor and Bandung, the west coast beaches
and the Thousand Island resorts. The city contains dozens of Western style
shopping malls, skyscrapers and sports clubs. Jakarta nightlife boasts
hundreds of Western styled discos and a wide variety of ethnic restaurants.
Western goods are readily available. There are numerous choices in public
transportation and taxis are cheap enough for everyday use. The climate is
tropical with a fairly predictable wet and dry season. The majority of
Indonesians are Muslim but major religions are respected and there are
significant Hindu and Christian minorities. National holidays include
Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, as well as Muslim feast days. In practice the
Islam of Asia is rather more moderate than that of the Middle East and
Western style clothing for women is entirely acceptable.

The local area

Cempaka Mas is about a 15 minute taxi ride from the centre of town. It is an
affluent suburb and has many Western style housing complexes.

The teachers hous is located within 5 minutes walking distance from the
school and is in a condo complex with tennis courts, weight room and pool
area.

Situated in North Jakarta, Cempaka Mas is a residential area with many
facilities:

· Shopping mall

· Supermarkets

· Restaurants

· Sports clubs, gyms and fitness centers

· Medical centers and hospital

· Movie theater, karaoke and billiard bars

The five schools

The parent franchise foundation owns five schools in Jakarta. Established
in 1997, Kelapa Gading is in the northeastern suburbs. Kebayoran Baru is in
the Block M shopping district, Bintaro is in the southern suburbs and the
newest school, Sunter, is also situated in the northeastern suburbs.
Cempaka Mas is the newest school in the group opened in the last 6 months.

Safety

The first free national elections in June 1999 passed peacefully and most
Indonesians are hopeful of continued peace during the transition period
ahead. Of course there can be no guarantees and situations can always
change. It should be noted that problems in other parts of Indonesia such
as Aceh, Ambon and East Timor do not affect life in Jakarta.

Although various Western Embassies maintain that Indonesia is a potential
security risk, Sunter is a safe area and none of the staff have ever
experienced any problems.

Concluding remarks

When making a decision to accept a professional position in another country,
it is best to have the maximum amount of information possible. It is the
intention here to present the work and living situation as clearly as
possible. However, if you have any questions, I will be happy to address
them and further explore the possibility of working together. In short, we
are looking for creative, flexible ESL professionals with a love of teaching
that is reflected in their work and classroom style.
