Looking for a new challenge? Teach at Shengda College, Zhengzhou, China.
SHENGDA COLLEGE is looking for thirty-five native-speaker Teachers to join the staff of the Foreign Language and Literature Department for the full academic year beginning late-August, 2005.

TEACHERS aged between 22 and 60, whose first language is English, from Canada, USA, Australia, Britain and New Zealand, having reasonably neutral speaking accents, will teach Oral English, English Writing, British and American Literature/Culture, Film, and/or Journalistic English to university Freshman to Senior students aged 17 to 25.

EDUCATION: Minimum of Bachelor degree, Master degree preferred, and TESOL or similar certificate is desirable.

MAJOR: English or other relevant Humanities or Arts majors such as Economics, Commerce, Linguistics, History, Literature, Education. Those with Scientific, Technical or Engineering majors and relevant ESL teaching experience or certificates will also be considered.

WORK EXPERIENCE: one year of teaching preferred.

TEACHING COUPLES are especially welcome and a partner whose qualifications and experience do not fully meet the requirements, may also be offered a position.

SALARY: All relevant qualifications and teaching experience are considered in setting an individual monthly salary in the range 3500 to 5500 RMB yuan. This amount is sufficient to live quite comfortably, and will allow you to take full opportunity of the vacations to travel extensively throughout China -- and even save a little.

TEACHING LOAD: 18 x 50 minute lessons -- given as nine double lessons -- per week, Monday to Friday. Some teachers may have some evening classes.
Teachers wishing to teach a reduced load for reduced salary, or who are unable to commit for at least two semesters, will not be considered except in exceptional circumstances.
Overtime is unlikely, cannot be guaranteed and is by mutual agreement.

CLASS SIZES: 25-30 for English Major Oral and 50-60 for most others.

AIR-FARE: Round trip (if actually traveled) is refunded for a two-semester contract (half will be paid soon after arrival, and the balance will be paid at the end of the contract). See contract for specific conditions.

TRAVEL ALLOWANCE: 1500 RMB for the winter vacation. If the contract is renewed for another year, the travel allowance will also be paid for the summer vacation.

MEDICAL TREATMENT: Free at Campus Clinic. A 50% subsidy is paid for approved treatment off-campus. Dental and optical expenses are not covered. Teachers are strongly advised to consider taking out their own travel insurance to cover vacation travel and other contingencies.

ACCOMMODATION: A private apartment is provided on or just outside campus and it is a leisurely 10 minute stroll along leafy avenues to the classrooms.
- A 3 bedroom, 100 square-metres (1000 sq ft) apartment is provided for each couple, and a 2 bedroom apartment for each single teacher.
- Each apartment is furnished and has its own kitchen with refrigerator, microwave oven and gas cook-top, bathroom with bath/shower, western toilet, and 24 hour hot water, en-suite toilet/laundry with washing machine, large living/dining room with TV, 2 or 3 bedrooms, and a balcony. They are spacious and light.
- All rooms are heated and the main bedroom is air-conditioned (cooling only).
- The buildings are secure and have intercom controlled main entrances.
- All necessary maintenance is carried out promptly by college staff, and all utilities except gas and personal telephone are included free of charge. Boiled water is supplied but some teachers prefer to purchase their own bottled water.

INTERNET ACCESS: A computer (no printer) and free internet connection is provided in each apartment.

THE CAMPUS: Shengda is located on large landscaped grounds in a rural setting about 40 minutes by bus south of the city. Over 12,000 students in 7 departments study for four-year degrees in several disciplines.

LOCAL FACILITIES: Shengda is virtually self-contained, with medical centre, post office, bank, hairdresser, newsagent, laundry, specialty shops, supermarkets, five college dining rooms, fast-food shop and eight private restaurants within 100 metres of the apartment. Other shops are just outside campus and at a nearby village.

ACCESS: A frequent bus service to Zhengzhou leaves from the front gate and costs 2.5 yuan, and there is a regular college teachers bus. Shopping trips are arranged on Saturday according to demand.
Zhengzhou has an international airport and train and bus stations that connect with all parts of China and neighboring countries.

TO APPLY: Please send personal details (including age, marital status, and nationality) - which MUST include a recent passport-style photo or your passport data page (saved as low resolution jpeg file or similar) - and your BRIEF resume to
teachinchina@ceinternet.com.au with “(your own name) at Shengda” as the subject line. (Attachments are preferred to body text)

Please DO NOT send scans of multiple degrees, certificates, documents or large file-size photographs unless specifically requested.

THE IDEAL APPLICATION: Will consist of a formally composed, error-free cover letter carefully crafted to showcase the essential skills of your chosen profession, plus a maximum 2-page resume sent as a MS Word or PDF attachment. The resume would ideally have a small recent passport-style photo (originally saved in a low resolution jpeg format) inserted at the top, and MUST include full personal details (age, gender, marital status, and nationality), and clearly show your qualifications (spelt out if necessary to avoid ambiguities) and brief relevant experience. Hard copy or faxed applications cannot be accepted.

Please provide contact telephone and fax numbers and your email address.

You will be provided with comprehensive information to assist in making a decision, and will be advised in all stages of your application by a foreign teacher who has taught at Shengda.

Applicants offered a position will be put in unrestricted email contact with about 35 past and present teachers, and current approved applicants via a private Yahoo mail group so that you can be fully informed before making your decision.

Only applications fully meeting the above requirements will be acknowledged.

VISA REQUIREMENTS: Only those who meet the requirements for issue of a Z-Visa before they enter China, or who are already teaching in China with a Residence Permit will be considered. Applicants are reminded that rules for the issue of visas MAY preclude issue to some nationalities in other than their own country, so the local Chinese Embassy should be consulted before making firm commitments.

Shengda currently has twenty-five foreign teachers from several countries, and in September, 2005 there will be thirty-seven, so come and share the China experience.

Regards

Tony LEE
