Hexi University

Hexi university is located within the centre of the Hexi Corridor, a long narrow stretch of land connecting Wu Shaoling in the East with Hami, Xinjiang in the West. The area is about 1000 km long from East to West, and it’s location along with an abundance of rich resources has meant it has held an important place in Chinese history since ancient times.

The University is situated within Zhangye City, a name which roughly translates, “open your arms to get western part”. Zhangye, called ancientGanZhou from early times has also a large, colourful history, which along with its stunning natural beauty helps it attract many visitors and tourists each year. In both 1992 and the year 2000, General secretary Jiang Zemin came to visit Zhangye and awarded the town the title of Golden Zhangye.

Hexi University is the only full time University within a 1000 mile radius. The Zhangye teachers college was originally built in 1958, and since then has undergone a series of developments. In 1962 it combined with Zhangye teachers school and eventually in May 2001 achieved university status, as ratified by the ministry of education. The University covers an area of over 1000 hectares, of which 230 000 square metres alone is devoted to dormitory buildings, that accommodate the 8160 full time students. Overall it’s fixed assets exceed 100 million Yuan.

In recent years the university has received a whole host of honours including: The model unit in social practice of Chinese students, The model unit of art education in China University, Gansu National Defence and Civilized Unit of Gansu Province. It has also received a model award for it’s environmental work, the fruits of which can be seen on stepping foot onto the campus. Throughout the university green trees and beautiul flowers are in abundance, making for a pleasant campus environment and one most conducive to study.

Although not losing site of its main function as training future generations of teachers, the University also makes an important contribution to local science, technology and serving the regional economy. The students who graduate from Hexi manage to find jobs througout the whole country, where they themselves spread the impact of the university, making their own important contributions to basic education and in turn regional economic systems.

The University offers a broad range of different subjects and specialities from brewing and travel management to Hexi history and culture. The university has 18 teaching departments catering for 25 undergraduate teaching specialities, 31 non teaching speciality subjects in addition to advanced fashion technology education and 6 research offices. Teacher training was originally developed around the core areas of: the liberal arts, science, industry, management, law, education, and history, which still forms the basic structure of courses within the University. In addition new combination degrees, special three year diplomas and adult education courses are also offered.

The University boasts extensive state of the art research facilities including 17 laborataries that support research in: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Life-Science, Computer Science, Education, Technology and Psychology. In addition there are a number of well equipped electronic reading rooms dotted around the campus. The Internet can be accessed from any one of the 1000 plus computers throughout the campus, which are used for research and to support the new mulitmedia teaching approaches used extensively in all departments.

There are over 700 teachers employed by the university, in addition to which there are 384 specialised teachers, 16 professors, 113 teachers holding MA qualifications and 8 with PHds, as well as over 30 part time professors and visisting professors and 8 foreign teachers. Recently 30 members of our staff received a number of awards including, The Yuan Ding Award from the provincial government, The National Model Workers Award, and Model Teachers Award from the Zeng Xianzi Fund for Education.
Since 1990 teachers at the University have undertaken a total of 180 research projects with 60 books and over 2000 articles published as a result. Of these works 60 have earned various awards including, Social Science and Technology Progress Awards, The Award of Social Science Colleges and Five One Project Awards.

The University has formed close links with colleges and universities abroad with whom we organise study exchanges, visits and carry out cooperative research. We also have a number of foreign teachers working at the University and hope to increase the number in the near future, a commitment supported by the belief that their presence helps improve overall teaching quality and standards.
