About Solo and SemarangSolo (aka Surakarta) rivals nearby Jogjakarta for the crown of the cultural heartland of Java. Solo is famed for its arts, including Batik, Gamelan and Wayang performances, the cornerstones of Javanese culture.
Semarang offers a different but no less fascinating slant to traditional Javanese culture. It is the administrative capital of Central Java and the most developed city in the province, though without the traffic problems, inflated cost of living and other drawbacks of such cities as Jakarta and Surabaya. Semarang is the perfect place to experiment with local cuisine, with no shortage either of European, Japanese, Korean and Thai restaurants.
Volcanoes (active and dormant), ancient temples (including the magnificent Borobodur and Prambanan temples), hill resorts and beaches (notably the largely unspoiled Karimunjawa islands) are all within reach of both Solo and Semarang – easily accessible over a weekend.
Supermarkets, swimming pools, and gyms are all available!
