Nanjing University of Information and Technology,founded in 1960, is one of the key institutions of high learning in China, giving priority to Science, Engineering and Commerce with characteristics of Atmospheric Science, Information Science & Technology, and Environmental Science. The University boasts 16 departments, which are: Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Applied Meteorology, Computer Science & Technology, Electronic Engineering, Information Engineering & Telecommunication, Mathematics, Geography, Physics, Foreign Languages, Public Management, Geo-space Information Science, Economics & Trade, Chinese,Law, and Information Management, in addition to other departments like Graduate School, WMO (World Meteorological Organization) Regional Meteorological Training Center (RMTC) , Sino-US Cooperative Remote Sensing Center, Key Laboratory for post-doctoral students, Professional College, Adult Education College, and Meteorological Research Institute.
Nanjing University of Information and Technology at present offers more than 40 specialties including Atmospheric Science, Applied Meteorology, Environmental Science, Resource Environment and Urban & Rural Planning, Computer Science & Technology, Information Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Engineering for Lightning Prevention, Information Management and System, Physics, English, Japanese, Chinese, Applied Electronic Technology, Numerical Mathematics and Applied Software, Public Management, Ecology, Geography, and Accounting. Designated as one of the key institutions of higher learning in China, the university is granted to confer bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in a variety of specialties, which are extensively recognized by foreign countries. The total enrollment of students is currently about 18,000, including 14000 undergraduates and 800 postgraduates. Among 1000 or so faculty members, 800 are engaged in teaching and doing research. The library has now collected a total of over 1350,000 books, 500,000 electronic books and 2000 periodicals in Chinese and other languages.
Located in the northern suburb of Nanjing, it occupies an area of 140 hectares with a floor space of 420,000 square meters. More than 40 laboratories are available for teaching, practicing, and research work in various disciplines, which are equipped with many up-to-date instruments and devices such as parallel computer, Doppler radar, satellite-image receiving and processing system, acquiring and processing system of remote sensing data, climate chamber, language lab, audio-visual aids and multi-media facilities. Facilities for sports and recreation like gymnasium, spots ground, swimming pool, cinema, Satellite and cable TV systems, have created a good environment for students’ spare time activities.
A lot of teachers also shoulder a wide range of scientific research programs sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation and other state key projects while fulfilling their teaching tasks. Many of them have so far won awards at national and provincial levels. Besides, a great number of teaching materials and monographs are compiled and published.
Since 1970s, an extensive academic exchange with foreign universities and research communities has been carried out. In addition to sending teachers and researchers to foreign countries, the Institute each year also invites many foreign meteorologists and professors to come here for academic visits, cooperative research, or to give lectures. Through the ratification of WMO in 1993, the WMO Regional Meteorological Training Center was established for training meteorological personnel from developing countries around the world. Since then, it has trained more than 400 trainees from over 80 countries and regions in the Asia-Pacific Region, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and East Europe. Long-term academic links between the Institute and over 20 meteorological training and education units in foreign countries like Britain, US, Australia, Israel, are also established.
