School Introduction
Inner Mongolia Normal University (IMNU), the earliest institution of higher learning established on the decision of the Party and the state in the border and minority areas, was first founded with the name of Inner Mongolia Normal College on May 5, 1952 in Ulanhot, which was the former capital city of the Inner Mongolian autonomous region. In 1954, IMNU was moved to Hohhot, the current capital city of the region. 1982 saw its original name-Inner Mongolia
Normal College being changed into Inner Mongolia Normal University.
Meanwhile, it was listed as the key university at the regional level. It merged with the former Inner Mongolia Normal Educational College in 2000, and therefore, the new IMNU has been come into being since then.
Up to now, IMNU has developed into a comprehensive Normal university with distinguishing regional and national characteristics under the guidance of privileged policy for the minority groups, under the correct leadership of the regional Party Committee and the government and the support from the society as well. So far, it has cultivated more than 60,000 elite Normal, administrators at different levels and capable scientific and technological personnel who are from multi-nationality background.
At present, IMNU is able to provide the wide range of education programs including postgraduate program, undergraduate program, two-year program, adult education, the higher vocational education program and the continuous education for the teaching staff and administrators. It is made up of 4 colleges, which include The Institute of Physical Education, The institute of Foreign Languages, The Institute of International Modern Design Art as well as The Continuous Education College. It also consists of 16 departments and teaching research sections covering education, Chinese Language and literature, political economy, history, Mongolian language and literature, music, fine arts, geography, chemistry, physics, biology, computer science, electrical education, science history and scientific management as well as the basic Marxism. In addition, it has 44 undergraduate speciality programs and two-year programs, 31 master's degree-granting bodies and 1 education master's degree granting body. There are currently 10,800 students studying in the undergraduate and two-year program, 14,000 in adult education program, 487 studying for the post-bachelor degree. Of the 1,767 staff, there is 914 academic staff. The number of the associate professors and professors comes to 49%. Among them, 2 are doctoral advisors and 181 master's supervisors. More than 1.4 million volumes of books are kept in the university. IMNU is well provided with up-to-date laboratory facilities and laboratories, for example, Resources Environment and Geographical Information System Research Center is recognized as the leading open research center among all of the universities of the region. The Journal of Inner Mongolia Normal University (Social Sciences Edition in Chinese Version) has been ranked one of the National Core Journals of Humanities/Social Sciences. IMNU has established 31 scientific research institutes where the considerable achievements have been obtained on the research of the various basic theories and their applications. 3 secondarory schools, which are The First Attached Middle School, The Second Attached Middle School and The Experimental Middle School, as well as one kindergarten were set up under its administration. With its safe, relaxed and friendly environment, IMNU is an ideal place to study.
As a key regional university, IMNU enjoys the reputation not only for developing the highly qualified bilingual teaching staff for the ethnic education, but also for nurturing the capable bilingual personnel in other areas. It has undertaken the projects of training the Normal for the teacher's schools throughout the region and of educating the Mongolian Normal who are able to conduct the lesson in Mongolian for the provinces of Qing Hai, Gan Su, Ji Lin, Liao Ning and Hei Longjiang as well as the autonomous regions of Uger, Ning Xia and Inner Mongolia. Therefore, IMNU has managed to create the bilingual teaching system of both Han Chinese and Mongolian to achieve one of the goals of the university -making effort to enhance the ethnic teaching education at the tertiary level. It has already established its fame as " the cradle of the ethnic Normal" with numbers of the Mongolian Normal and students and others of different minority nationalities accounting for 51% and 41% of the total respectively.
Upon entering the new millennium, IMNU reaches into a new era of developing its target. After the study and discussion of the educational theories concerned, the greater emphasis has been put on the issue of teaching reform. It is able to offer more educational activities and enroll more students. The rapid progress has been taken place in the process of completion the tasks of disciplinary reconstruction and the improvement of postgraduate program. "Three-five project" with the aim of producing excellent young and backbone Normal has been carried out so as to meet the requirement of staff development. The first stage of the IMNU's network building has been successfully finished. In order to improve the teaching and learning environment, more labs and computer rooms have constructed with the increasing number of brand-new computers, advanced teaching instruments and up-to-date reference books and materials. The main teaching building with the area of 240,000 square meters and the art building with the area of 140,000 square meters are under construction. The stadium and other teaching and leisure facilities will have been built before the university's 50th anniversary. Based on the "Tenth Five-year" Plan made by IMNU, the breakthrough will be made on the above aspects. By 2005, numbers of regular students in undergraduate program, postgraduate program and students studying for the education master degree will have come to 15,000, 500 and 800 respectively, while the registered students for adult education will be kept to the number of 12,000 or so. There will be 1,000 trainees receiving the continuous education each year. On the premise of renewing the educational and academic ideas, IMNU will develop into a modern Normal university with unique national and regional features by continuing innovating the management system, creating the sound teaching and learning setting and improving its capacity to provide more postgraduate programs. Furthermore, it will play such roles as the regional higher teacher education center, the center of further education for secondary and primary Normal, the research center of the reform and development of the basic education and ethnic education.
