Changchun Teachers College, Jilin province, China.
Start date Oct 8 2005. Here is an opportunity to have the security, good conditions and stability of a university teaching post with unusually good pay. No night or weekend classes, no sudden schedule changes and only two classes of about 20 students each so that you can get to know them well. If you wish to conduct some private classes for an extra income, it’s OK with us.
Changchun Teachers College is continuing a new program in which students do the first two years of their degree in China then complete it abroad. The students receive intensive English training to properly prepare them to study and participate in campus life at an English speaking university in Australia.
We are seeking suitably motivated and qualified native English speakers to teach the English component of the course. You must have an Australian, British, Canadian, New Zealand, Irish or U.S. accent.
Should you be a successful applicant, you will give twenty-four lessons, each of fifty minutes per week. This gives a total student contact time of twenty hours a week.
You will have considerable freedom to choose your own teaching style but we request that an emphasis be placed on student participation. Class sizes will be kept small (maximum 25, probably closer to 18) to allow for personal interaction. This allows you to be much more effective and satisfied than trying to teach conversation to classes of 40 to 65 which are common in China.
The pay is 84,000 RMB for a 15-month contract that starts on the 8th of October 2005 and finishes early Jan 2007. You’ll be paid 6,000 RMB on the 16th of each month. Plus there is a 5,000 RMB completion bonus at the end of the contract. Income tax is about 175 RMB per month. There might be a nine-month contract available too.
You’ll be provided with free, comfortable, accommodation in the Foreign Teachers Building a comfortable walk from your classrooms. It is about 2 to 3 star western motel standard, but luxurious compared to most Chinese homes. Meals are not provided free, but restaurants are inexpensive and you can also cook for yourself if you wish. The accommodation is very good by Chinese standards, clean and functional with a private refrigerator, bathroom and sit down toilet. Heating is provided free in winter. Water, gas, phone rental and electricity are free too. You’ll have cable TV but the programs are not very interesting and most teachers buy an inexpensive (300 – 450 RMB) DVD player because latest release DVDs are widely available for 6 RMB (about 75 cents US) each.
You will have opportunities to travel during the three fully paid holidays: about six weeks at Chinese New Year and a full week in October and May. In addition to the three fully paid holidays, you will have a two-month half paid holiday from early July till early September 2006. There are two teaching semesters of 18 weeks each year.
We are looking for people who want to rise to the challenge of being as good a teacher as they can. You must be a native speaker with a British, North American or Australasian accent. You must have a bachelor degree (preferably in a language field) or equivalent or an EFL/ESL/TESOL qualification or second language teaching experience.
We can provide documentation for you to get a valid working visa.
Send me an email telling me about yourself and why you think you might like and be suitable for the position and we’ll take it from there. If you can, please attach a jpeg photo (less than 250kb please) of yourself, so I know who I’m talking to, and phone number(s) with good times to call.
I’ll get back to you promptly.
Best wishes,
John Haigh

The college website is www.cncnc.edu.cn but there isn’t any info about the International College yet. Don’t take any notice of the employment and admission section, as a teacher at the International College on campus you receive substantially higher pay than teachers in the regular foreign languages departments.
