Henan Agricultural University (HAU)
Henan Agricultural University(HAU) grew out of Henan Public Agricultural Specialized School which was founded in 1913. In 1927, Henan Public Agricultural Specialized School, together with Henan Public Law School and Zhongzhou University, were merged into Kaifeng National Zhongshan University. After that, HAU operated under several different names, such as Agronomy Subject of Provincial Zhongshan University, Agronomy College of Provincial Henan University and Agronomy College of National Henan University. It was separated from the Agronomy College of National Henan University and was named Henan Agronomy College in 1952 and moved to Zhengzhou from Kaifeng in 1959. It was renamed Henan Agricultural University in September, 1984.
HAU covers an area of over 260 hectares in which 222 hectares are used as teaching and experimental areas. The total construction area of the buildings is 445,000 square meters. The university library houses 1.22 million books and more than 6000 periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. Also there is a large campus computer network in the university.
HAU today is a comprehensive university with 9 branches of learning: agronomy, medicine, science, engineering, liberal arts, economics, management, law and education. It offers authorized first rate doctorates. HAU also offers 12 major subjects at the national, provincial and ministry level, 2 post doctorate research centers, 10 doctorate pecialties, 30 master specialties and 38 undergraduate specialties in 10 colleges and 2 teaching sections. Also there are 28 research institutes and 7 research centers or bases at national, ministerial or provincial levels which are the National Engineering Research Center for Wheat, the National Tobacco Cultivation & Physiology & Biochemistry Research Center, the Key Laboratory of Renewable Energy Ministry of Agriculture, P. R. China, the National Maize mprovement Centre (Zhengzhou Sub-center) and Henan Key Laboratory of Agricultural Biotechnology & ngineering Technology, the Henan Crop Growing, Adjustment and Control Laboratory and the Henan Vegetable and Flower Seedling Research Center.
There are over 1400 staff members in HAU, of whom there are 675 specialized teachers, 1 academician,79 professors, 239 associate professors. Over 110 faculty members have obtained doctorate degrees, while 260 faculty members have master degrees. 86 faculty members are national, ministerial or provincial excellent experts and cross-century academic and technological leaders. The present number of students is 19156 , among them 1021 are graduate students, 13805 are undergraduates and 4330 are adult education students.
HAU has undertaken and completed significant scientific research programs in wheat, corn, cotton, paulownia, energy, animal husbandry and the development of scientific agriculture. HAU is carrying out more than 200 research projects, over half of them are national and ministerial projects. In recent years, HAU has received 10 state and more than 200 provincial awards on research projects.
HAU has established intercollegiate ties with universities in the United States of America, Japan, Ukraine, Thailand, the Netherlands, France, Australia and other countries. The university has carried out research work with more than 40 universities from 20 countries.
In the 21st century, HAU continues to consider development acceleration as its main theme, improving the management system reform as its motivating force, and adjusting the school structure as an important goal. HAU also emphasizes quality-oriented and innovation-oriented education and endeavors to build a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university. In this way, HAU can become a base of senior agricultural talents, agricultural science, technology innovation, and new and high agricultural technology in Henan. It also will be an important research base of agricultural development strategy in the province.
