EFL Lecturer Positions (2-year renewable contracts)
APPLICANTS MUST BE MALE, NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS

We are interested in recruiting well-qualified, committed and experienced teachers of EFL/ESL/EAP to teach in the Orientation English Program (OEP), a well-established structured 20-hour-per-week pre-university intensive course in English for academic purposes. The OEP is part of the Preparatory Year, preparing male students for English-medium studies leading to a B.S. degree in science, engineering or industrial management. Opportunities exist to contribute materials (all produced in-house) or for transfer later to the University English Program (UEP) a three-course, American-model program of undergraduate writing beginning with freshman composition.

The ELC at KFUPM currently employs over 100 faculty (American, Australian, British, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand and South African) and is expanding. Faculty are hired for September and February.

To comply with Saudi government regulations all candidates must be male and under the age of 60 years at time of appointment.

QUALIFICATIONS

An MA in TEFL/TESOL or Applied Linguistics, a one- year, full-time postgraduate diploma in TEFL/TESL from an accredited university, or an RSA/UCLES DELTA is preferred. More basic postgraduate qualifications in TESOL (CELTA or Cert TEFLA) can also be considered for candidates with particularly appropriate experience.

EXPERIENCE
For MA in TEFL/TESOL or Applied Linguistics, at least two years’ full-time teaching of EFL/EAP overseas is required. With more basic postgraduate qualifications, further experience is expected.

COMPENSATION

Salaries are competitive depending on qualifications and experience and range from a yearly salary of SR 95,000 to SR134,000 (approx. $25,000 to $35,700). All compensation is tax-free.

Transport allowance: Faculty are additionally paid a transport allowance of SR6000 per year at the rate of SR500 per month.

Service Increment: Contracts are for two years renewable. When renewing the contract lecturers get an annual increase in base salary depending on their performance.

End-of-Service Gratuity: The employee will be paid an amount equal to half a month's salary for each of the first five years of employment; this is converted to a month's salary after five years of service and for each of the subsequent years.

Additional remunerations: The ELC also offers an Evening Language Program, a Diploma English Program (DEP) and short courses to various ministries and private concerns. These courses are taught by ELC faculty members who are interested in augmenting their salary. Lecturers who wish to teach the OEP/DEP course during the Summer session (which is 8 weeks long) are paid two months’ additional salary. There are also opportunities for lecturers to earn additional income on various short courses (four to six weeks) during the summer.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working hours: The working week is from Saturday to Wednesday. OEP teachers have to teach 20 contact hours a week and attend 5 office hours a week and participate in some administrative duties. OEP lecturers have the option of teaching early shift (08:00 – 09:50 and 13:10 – 15:00) or late shift (10:00 – 11:50 and 15:20 – 17:10). Occasionally, faculty may have to substitute, on a rota basis, for a colleague who is sick or absent.

University Year: The academic calendar, as set by the Ministry of Higher Education, consists of two semesters: Fall; and, Spring. Each consists of 15 weeks of teaching followed by 2 weeks allocated for Final examinations.

Local phone calls are free.

Vacation: Faculty leave is determined by the academic calendar and lecturers are generally free between semesters and during the Summer, unless they decide to teach the Summer session. In the next academic year, the Fall semester begins on 13 September 2003 and ends on 29 January 2003. The Spring semester commences on 14 February 2003, and ends on Wednesday 9 June.
