NUESTRA CASA seeks part-time Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) TEACHERS

Description of Nuestra Casa and its Adult ESL Program Nuestra Casa, a community-based organization under the fiscal sponsorship of the Community Development Institute, began providing participatory English as a Second Language instruction to East Palo Alto adults in November 2003. In June, 2004, the Ravenswood City School District decided to subcontract its CBET (Community-Based English Tutoring) program to Nuestra Casa.

In order to expand the program to serve the needs of East Palo Alto’s adult English Language Learners, Nuestra Casa seeks to hire adult ESL teachers who share our philosophy and vision. The program’s content and context-driven approach to language study places the students and their needs at the center and takes into account the social context of language acquisition. Curriculum revolves around the discussion of themes like Education, Community, Health, and Work. Classroom activities draw from students’ real-life experiences and present them with the tools that they can use in actual situations. Paid teacher training and mentorship provided. Teachers will participate in planning and feedback sessions.

REQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALIFICATIONS
 Experience teaching and assessing adult ESL
learners
 Interested in and comfortable working in a
community organizing setting
 Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
 Training in ESL teaching methodology
 Experience or interest in popular education as
a teaching strategy
 Proficiency in spoken Spanish
 Ability to work as part of a team
