1. ATTENTION - Only read this if you're a SERIOUS Websurfer
===================================================
I have a great tool any serious websurfer needs to use if
they want to get the most out of what the net has to offer.
It's the Alexa toolbar and we use it here at the
ESLemployment offices everyday to assist in digging out the
best sites and resources, quickly and easily.
Now before
you say "Great, another toolbar to add to
my
collection..." this one really is different. As you
navigate
your favorite sites Alexa will automatically tell you about
other sites of similar interest...essentially doing your
work for you.
It also serves up cool information like how popular a site
is, how many other sites link to that site, and the list
goes on.
You can download the toolbar here:
http://download.alexa.com/index.cgi?amzn_id=esltextsbooks
Give it a try and don't blame me if you get addicted to
it.
Until next week.

I have turned down continuing at a job in Saudi for
$5800/month for a job in Russia for $600. Russia was much
more fun. Also, the absolute BEST job I have ever had was
in
Kazakhstan for $300/month.
AT present, i need CASH and I'm going back to Saudi. It's
what's important to you at that time in your life. If you
want good students and a good time, take the low pay. But,
if you need cash, take the heat...

Teaching in Vietnam is mostly a great experience. I'd be
interested in hearing from anyone teaching here - especially
those in locations outside of Ho Chi Minh City, as I'm
thinking of trying to move away from the big city. The beach
sounds nice.

Summer...
Hello. I'm a 48-year-old American ESL teacher. I've been
teaching here in Seville, Spain for over fifteen years, and
I'd like to find a job in a summer camp in the Galicia
region for the month of July.
Any ideas on how I might go about this?

3. From the Field - ESL Textbook Recommendations
===================================================
This semester, based on a trusted recommendation, I tried
the following grammar book (also covers punctuation and
style) which (don't laugh!) is designed for North American
eight-graders. I'd like to report, though, that I had a
tremendous success with it.
The funny thing is, the rules for English don't change
according to your age, and this friendly, unthreatening and
very approachable guide to grammar worked well in my
language writing class of twentysomethings. Plus, it was
considerably cheap when compared to similar products (under
$6.00 USD second-hand). The downside is that there are
relatively few "exercises" if you are looking specifically
for a workbook.

4. From the Field - The Precarious Finances of ESL Schools
===================================================
With regards to fairly compensating ESL employees, you
probably need to have run your own language to school to
understand just how tight the financial situation usually
is. It’s fine on paper. You can work out the student
numbers
per class you need to break even and then you can project
the profit that accrues from each additional student until
the maximum number per group is reached. The trouble is it
seldom goes to plan. You decide to run an uneconomic class
because you don’t want to disappoint the students,
and in
any case, if you didn’t run the class, the teachers
would
have to be paid anyway...
