Courchesne writes...Teachers who left in the night
...The first is a case where we heard that immigration ws
involved. Still not sure of all the details, but this
teacher just disappeared and the most we could get out of
someone who came later was that the police showed up at the
building where both of them were living ( in separate
apartments) and took him away for an immigration violation.
It was rumored that his university diploma was a fake.
Another one was an instructor who went on vacation and never
came back. She left with her husband to take a vacation in
Canada, never came back and we never heard from her again.
Anyone have any weird stories about teachers who seemed
to
disappear?...

In 1992 at 50 I left for Somalia to work in a hospital,
then
came on to China and and have been here and in Russia and
Korea ever since. Been home a few times. Had planned to go
home to stay but a new job came that has me writiing,
researching and editing textbooks and also marketing them.
This job is satisfying and so I plan to stay on a few more
years. Actually I have come to the same point as the old
former "China hands" who were my college teachers
at PUC in
1959 who wanted to return to China then but coulldnt, but
wanted to be buried there upon death. Am afraid I will miss
my friends here too much if i go home to stay.
It is not irrational for an American to live permanltly in
China nowadays.

students will surely benefit.
There is definitely a lot out there regarding methodology
and approaches which will help you in the classroom. You
could do the research yourself, but why not participate in
a
course which will teach you the basics of second language
teaching. Plus, if you take a course, you will earn a
certificate which is recognizeable by employers....

4. From the Field - Does Procrastination Affect Your ESL
Teaching?
===================================================
Are you procrastinators? Do you find yourself rushing to
prepare the lesson for your class an hour ahead of time?
If
this sounds like you, there is probably a lot of unnecessary
stress in your life.
Procrastination is something that a lot of us deal with,
but
did you know that with some quick behavioral changes, you
can kick this habit? Just think - no more rushing to grade
those papers at the last minute. No more getting your travel
documents approved - with 2 minutes to spare!
The first thing you need to do is decide upon your goal.
Let’s say that it’s to prepare your class one
day ahead of
time. Now, you’ll simply need to put yourself on a
reward/punishment program and stick to it! If you accomplish
the goal, take yourself out for pizza, or give yourself some
other treat.

5. From the Field - The Internet for ESL Schools
===================================================
For ESL teachers, the internet is a rich source of free
materials that can be downloaded and printed off for
classroom use. This in itself is a benefit for schools on
a
tight materials budget. Many sites exist too that have
interactive features so that if students have computer
access they can find useful additional practice in
pronunciation and listening comprehension, for example.
For the more creative teachers and students it is also
possible to set up a website to permit all kinds of useful
practice activities. Teachers migh also design their own
tests and exercises and post them on the site for the
benefit of students after they leave the school as well as
during their course.
