--> "Gerard Denaro" wonders...Does Western Culture Need a
Reality Check?

... I feel a certain sadness to see how much Australians
take for granted and how admired our lifestyle is by the
people I meet in the third world. As a relief teacher I get
to experience the best and worst of our local public high
schools. Students who claim school life to be boring, may
eventually find out the hard way that the dole or a dead-end
job will be even more so. I am dismayed by the amount of
time and talent wasted by so many students whom I tell, only
get one chance to be the age they are now....

--> "CizinkaNaZemi" asks...How Long is TOO Long to Teach
Overseas?

... I have another question for those who have lived abroad
for a few years or more: How do you know when it's time to
go home? To your home country, I mean, because the point
when you start calling a foreign country "home" is a
different question. As certain and wanderlusty as I was when
I moved to the Czech Republic four years ago, I found this
Christmas that the tide has changed. I thought I had learned
while living abroad that home is where you make it, nowhere
and everywhere, but I'm sensing a serious gravitational pull
back to my hometown. After years abroad, knowing you feel
like a foreigner in your native country as well, what would
make (has made) you move back? Would you (Did you) feel like
you are regressing? Why or why not?...

--> "phoenix" ponders...Is it Prudent to Bring Your Child to
an ESL Job Overseas?

... I have been teaching in the UK since getting my CELTA in
July 2004, but would now like to start teaching abroad
(Spain would be a good start) & I would be travelling with
my 8 year old daughter. Anybody who could share their
experience with similar circumstances would be very helpful.
I am looking maybe, for a start, for a full school year,
starting in september 2005...what are the odds of finding
such a job with a child in tow (one that would benefit them
too)?.....

3. Hey, They're Making Fun of my Profession - No Fair!
===================================================

"...why do people come to expensive English classes?

* Their parents or boss made them.
* They are too lazy to study at home.
* They have nothing else to do on Monday and Wednesday
evenings.
* They wouldn't mind shagging a native English-speaker or
another student
(or both).
* They still believe that by turning up to English lessons
twice a week they will somehow master the language.

In these circumstances your priorities are as follows:

1. Keep the students amused.
2. Keep the DOS off your back.
3. Give everybody concerned the impression that the
students' English is improving."

4. Only Unhappy ESL Teachers Ever Complain!
===================================================

...It seems to me that a reputable school that wishes to do
the best for its students and be fair to its teachers needs
to do something to prove its credentials. It is not
surprising I suppose that most reactions to these blogs come
from teachers rather than school owners and directors. I
mean most of the gripes are the ones teachers have: low pay,
too many teaching hours, poor facilities. And, of course,
it's easy to believe that most schools are exploitative and
most teachers are hard done-by; I mean why would a satisfied
teacher bother to post a comment anyway?

5. Honestly, How Much Time Do You Spend Preparing for Class?
===================================================

...Prepping for courses and class assignments can be
daunting for even the most experienced teacher or student.
Besides the matter of preparedness, the other issue is time!
How much of it are you willing to contribute so that you'll
get everything you want and expect from the content? This
juggling act of time spent in preparing and maintaining
one's own sanity is one that many of us deal with on a daily
basis...
