For those of you looking for a job in the shortest time
possible, this quote from Jennifer Barclay sums up the power
of proactive job seeking:
"After
many years of teaching and job searching, I know how
important it is to be proactive in the job search. The ESL
School Finder is a powerful tool because it contains the
physical address, as well as an email address with a contact
person for many schools. This information is so vital
because I know that my resume will definitely get into the
right hands."

1. Are you a grammar whiz?
===================================================
Hey Everyone,
Calling all grammar geeks and activity gurus...lali needs
your help.
***
I'm on a refresher course and need to teach something to
my
peers on the course. I'm thinking about teaching the present
continuous. Any ideas, suggestions, material on the best
way
I could teach it. I don't want to just give them exercise
after exercise. I would like to have the students actively
using it.

Please take a minute to share your knowledge and help out
this teacher in need!

Your ESL colleagues are looking for guidance and help from
fellow professionals. Take a minute and help them out!
--> onewarmline
wonders...Can Canadian ESL teachers work in
the U.S.?
...First, are there distinctions made about where you did
your MA? I mean, do college hiring committees regard MAs
from some schools more highly than others? I 'm trying to
get an insight into the culture, being a foreigner from the
Great White North (Canada, if you are unfamiliar with that
appellation). And second, will colleges hire a Canadian
(read foreign) MA TESOL graduate? I know there are visas
available for the purpose, but will US colleges hire foreign
teachers into TESOL teaching positions?...
Read the rest here...
--> camelcarl
asks...Is this good advice for writing an ESL
cover letter?
... The same rules for writing a good cover letter apply
to
all industries. Keep it short, concise, talk about how you
can benefit the organization you are looking to work
with...and always get a few friends to read it over before
sending it out...don't sent generic cover letters...tailor
it to each place you are applying to...put some comments
in there that show you have actually researched the
organization...
Find out more here...
--> alisonboston
advises...Being older is an advantage in
the ESL industry, not a disadvantage!
...I am in the middle years and I know I am in demand -
and
could do way more work than I have hours or inclination to
do - providing I am willing to work for the money they wantt
o pay - and there's the rub. I feel my maturity and
experience place me in a higher wage category than a younger
teacher - yet I have to fight for that - and walk away from
a lot of jobs because the schools don't get that they can
get more for my services than a younger teacher...

3. From the Field - ESL Living on a Budget - Renting Movies
for Free?
===================================================
Living abroad? Love to watch movies or read? Spend too much
money on entertainment (a standard movie ticket in Japan
is
approximately $17 US!)? It’s time to checkout your
local...
...Library!
Ok, so maybe this seems like pointing out the obvious, but
I’ll tell ya, though I like to think I’m pretty
quick, it
took me a few months living in Japan before learning about
the library and I couldn’t have been more surprised!
Not
only did I not expect English language movies and magazines,
but the book selection was pretty impressive!

4. From the Field - From Teacher to Manager
===================================================
Is it possible for teachers to make the transition from
the
classroom to management? In answer to that question I would
say of course it is; many of those currently in management
positions have teaching backgrounds. By recruiting managers
from the teaching team, the school has . . .
. . . the advantage of already having a working relationship
with the appointee and benefiting from that person’s
existing knowledge of how the school is run. In addition
it
helps establish a career progression for teachers. However,
it is not necessarily a straightforward process.
Firstly, the teacher turned manager needs to have a good
overview of how the school works as a unified organization.
Even more important, the teacher must be confident in
his/her ability to maintain harmonious teamwork. In a school
with a "them and us" culture, teachers who cross
to
management could be viewed as traitors by their colleagues
and could find face resistance and lack of cooperation.
