Scooby *Scott* Doo writes...Let's unite...
...Well,
why don't we unite then as teachers? I mean for
starters we need to kick out the bums who run the slave
driving language schools. Aren't they the real racists? I
mean they hire, so they decide who works, and they could
easily hire on the basis of non-discrimination, but they
choose not to. So to the devile with them! That's what I
say. They arbitrarily fire on the base of race too, I've
seen it. Come to think of it, there are some Univesity
programs that do the same too. Basically all employers when
it comes down to it...

Thomas Goodnight writes...Huggin' Trees...
...Hey
anyone notice that teachers by and large are tree
huggers? Yeah it's a generalization...but an accurate one.
What's
up with that? Personally, me being a teacher and all
it gives me a bad name. People in this profession are always
belly-aching about this and that..."woe is me" and
what
not...

...I am
looking to take a distance learning class to become
tesl/tefl/tesol certified but I do not know which
certification I should receive. I also do not know what
programs are accredited or are actually accepted by
employers in Costa Rica. I do not want to waste money on
incorrect certification. If anyone knows of any good
programs which are accepted in Costa Rica for a position
teaching english as a second language...

3. From the Field - ESL Classroom Observations
===================================================
Yes, we
are required to have them from time to time and they
are pain in the neck. But, are they really helpful or just
more red tape to cut through to keep our jobs safe? I’m
talking about the classroom observations that are often
conducted by our peers or, in some cases, our employers.
Speaking
for myself, I’ve had relatively good feedback from
these activities that have served to improve my teaching
methodology. When I say "good" I mean constructive,
i.e.
useful, criticism. On the other hand, I’ve heard some
horror
stories from my colleagues

4. From the Field - Quality assurance
===================================================
One of
the management aspects that should be on our minds is
the way we assure quality for students. For seamless
delivery of quality all departments of the school need to
work in harmony. All too often I've seen organizations that
have pockets of excellence but overall the standard is
patchy because the different parts of the school don't know
how to work together.
It is
not enough to have efficient adminstrators, well
qualified teachers and dynamic social organizers if these
people don't work within an over-arching system of mutual
cooperation. Let me give an example...
