LEARNER-BASED + TASK-BASED READING LESSON - by Andriy
Ruzhynskiy
---------------------------------------------------

Level: pre-intermediate and above

Aim: Sts will be able to (SWBAT) get familiar with wide
range of authentic reading materials and to learn how to
extract necessary information from these materials.

Preparation: magazines/newspapers cuttings (as many as
possible) on different topics that might be interesting for
your Sts.

Staging:

1. Talk to your Sts for a couple of minutes to introduce the
topic. Discuss why we should understand original (authentic)
materials, how deep do we understand them, etc. SWBAT create
personal interest in original newspaper/magazines materials;
get ready for working with these materials.

2. Arrange your Sts into small groups and ask them to find
the cuttings that are interesting for them and they would
like to 'investigate'. These could be different
advertisements, user’s manuals, catalogue materials, weather
forecasts, etc. SWBAT select the materials which are
interesting personally for them, increase personal
motivation to work with the materials provided.

3. Put these questions on the board and ask your Sts to
answer the questions in pairs:

a) What is this text about?
b) Is this information useful for you and why?
c) What are the key words to understand the main ideas
of the text? Do you know them?

SWBAT grasp the main idea (reading for gist), as well as the
key vocabulary.

4. Ask every group or pair to share their answers during
open class feedback. SWBAT become aware of wide range of
the subjects represented in the materials of different
groups.

5. Ask your Sts to read the text and to make questions for
their peers who will read the text later. Monitor the groups
and help with the questions, make sure that the questions
are correct. SWBAT read for details and to prepare for their
peers the tasks that will be exactly as difficult as these
Sts need; have some practice in accuracy while making the
questions.

6. Ask the groups to swap the texts, to read them and to
answer the questions prepared by their peers. SWBAT read the
other texts for details and to learn new vocabulary.

7. Re-arrange the group and make two teams. Ask them to make
two posters, 'Our first original texts'. Provide them with
A4 paper and markers. SWBAT use the materials that they have
just read to create a new type of text (poster); have some
free speaking practice while preparing the poster.

8. Put the 2 posters on the wall and the teams to swap and
to read the posters. SWBAT share their ideas; have extended
speaking practice to discuss the materials.

9. Have open-class discussion on the posters. SWBAT see the
result of their work; realize that they have made one more
step towards increasing their fluency in English.
