Volunteer English Teacher to help in Costa Rican Public Schools
In this program, volunteers will be assisting the English classes in the Public School System in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Currently, we offer assistance to public schools in Herediaa province filled with history, culture, and a plethora of activities and tourist sites. This program is an excellent option for recent graduates of education looking to gain professional and multicultural experience, and definitely the choice for people looking to work with children.
The Costa Rican public school year starts in February and ends in mid-December with a 2-week vacation in July. Volunteers will have the option of teaching for 1 or both school semesters, with time to travel or participate in other volunteer activities during the break.
Here, the schedule is largely based on the amount of English classes offered and the schedule of the residing English professor. Qualified volunteers will essentially take over the English classes. The current professor will observe the classes as a form of training. The volunteer teacher will work directly with the professor to improve and enhance the current English curriculum. In this program, the volunteers will have the option of taking some Fridays off in order to travel for long weekends.
As this program option works directly with the Public School System, we need to meet the standards of the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education (MEP). Therefore, all volunteer teachers are required to have a university degree in Education, preferably Bilingual Education, and/or TEFL/TESOL certified.
