Volunteer ESL Teacher in Rural/Tourism Community in Costa Rica
This was our original program option, and is now our most popular and commonly referred to as our "traditional program". In this program, volunteers have the option to conduct classes in locations all over the country, whether a tropical beach setting or lush mountainous terrain is preferred. Here, volunteers will teach members of the tourism sector and/or local residents hoping to acquire enough language skills to earn a better-paying job within the tourism industry.
This program lasts between 6 months and 1 year in order to make the biggest impact on the community. The students will work directly with the local Chamber of Tourism who will help recruit students, organize the classes, and provide materials. They've also been known to offer discounted tours and other tourist activities for the volunteer teacher!
Volunteers will have between 30-50 students total and work approximately 40 hours a week: 20 hours/ week teaching and 20 hours/week lesson planning. The classes are offered Monday-Thursday providing 3-day weekends to travel and explore the real Costa Rica! Since this is a largely independently-run program, we do require that volunteers have a TEFL/TESOL certificate and teaching experience.
